Canada Wildfires 2026: What Caused the Fires, Where They Are Burning, and the Growing Disaster Threat

Canada is experiencing another major wildfire season in 2026, with thousands of fires burning from British Columbia to Ontario and into Canada's northern territories. While the season began relatively slowly, extreme heat, dry vegetation, low humidity and periods of strong winds created conditions for explosive fire growth during July and August.
As of August 26, 2026, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) reported 5,143 fires since the beginning of the year, burning approximately 4.43 million hectares — nearly 11 million acres. There were 645 active fires across Canada, and the country's National Preparedness Level stood at Level 5, the highest level, indicating significant wildfire activity and the need for international firefighting assistance.
The scale of the 2026 fires has produced more than a Canadian emergency. Smoke has repeatedly traveled thousands of miles across the border into the United States, affecting air quality from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast.

How Bad Are the Canada Wildfires in 2026?
The season changed dramatically as summer progressed.
On June 10, Canada had recorded 1,747 wildfires and approximately 166,400 hectares burned. By August 26, those figures had increased to 5,143 fires and more than 4.43 million hectares burned.
That means the amount of land burned increased by more than 26 times between June 10 and August 26.
The federal government reported on August 18 that prolonged periods of heat, low humidity and dry conditions had shaped the season. Northwestern Ontario suffered intense fires during July, while southern British Columbia experienced persistent heat and below-normal precipitation during July and August.
Although 2026 has been destructive, it has not reached the extraordinary acreage burned during Canada's record 2023 season or the second-ranked 2025 season. Federal officials have said 2026 wildfire activity remains below the five-year average.
But acreage alone does not measure a wildfire disaster. The location of a fire determines whether it threatens homes, highways, utilities, First Nations communities and other critical infrastructure.
What Caused the 2026 Canada Wildfires?
There isn't one single cause of the 2026 Canadian wildfire disaster.
It is important to distinguish between what ignites a wildfire and what allows that wildfire to become enormous.
Lightning
Lightning is one of Canada's most important wildfire ignition sources.
The Canadian government says lightning causes roughly half of Canada's wildfire ignitions but is responsible for a disproportionately large share of the total area burned. Lightning fires often begin in remote forests where they can grow substantially before crews can reach them.
That distinction is particularly important in northern Canada.
The Northwest Territories government says most wildfires in the territory are caused by lightning. Dry lightning can be especially dangerous because lightning strikes may occur without enough rainfall to wet the surrounding vegetation.
Individual 2026 fires illustrate the problem. For example, the Northwest Territories' ZF052-26 fire began after a lightning strike on July 16 and had grown to approximately 84,000 hectares by August 27. Another lightning-caused fire, ZF037-26, had burned approximately 43,300 hectares.
Human-Caused Fires
People also start a significant number of Canadian wildfires.
Potential human ignition sources include unattended campfires, equipment, vehicles, discarded smoking materials, power infrastructure and other accidental or intentional activity.
But it is important not to assume a human cause simply because a fire starts close to a populated area.
The massive Bald Range wildfire near Summerland, British Columbia, is a good example. RCMP investigators were still working in August to determine its origin and asked the public for photographs, video and dash-camera footage from the area where the fire began.
Police also specifically warned against misinformation circulating online about the fire's cause. An individual shown in widely shared video using a wildlife-deterrent device was identified as a witness, not a suspect, and police determined that incident occurred kilometers from the suspected fire-origin area.
In other words, where a cause remains under investigation, it should be reported as undetermined, rather than attributed to speculation circulating on social media.
Heat and Drought Turn an Ignition Into a Disaster
The spark is only the beginning.
What made many 2026 fires particularly dangerous was the environment surrounding them.
Going into summer, federal forecasts called for above-normal temperatures across nearly all of Canada during June, July and August. Long-running drought and precipitation deficits had also persisted across significant portions of the country.
By August, the federal government identified four major factors behind the severe wildfire conditions:
prolonged heat, low humidity, dry vegetation and below-normal precipitation.
Under these conditions, trees, grasses and forest-floor vegetation lose moisture. Once an ignition occurs, those fuels can burn rapidly. Strong winds can then accelerate the fire front and carry embers far ahead of the main blaze.
Scientists have also examined the role of climate change in creating those conditions. A rapid World Weather Attribution analysis reported in August concluded that human-caused warming made the severe fire-weather conditions affecting northwestern Ontario and the Northwest Territories approximately twice as likely as they would have been in a pre-industrial climate.
That does not mean climate change physically ignited each wildfire. Lightning or human activity provides the ignition.
Climate change instead changes the background conditions in which fires occur. Hotter temperatures, drought and lower fuel moisture can make forests easier to ignite and allow fires to spread farther and burn more intensely.
Ontario Wildfires Trigger Major Evacuations
Northwestern Ontario became one of the major centers of Canada's wildfire emergency during July.
A series of intense fires threatened remote communities and First Nations, eventually prompting Ontario to request federal assistance.
The Canadian Armed Forces began assisting with the evacuation of Eabametoong First Nation (Fort Hope) on July 18. Four Royal Canadian Air Force CC-130 Hercules aircraft were assigned to help move residents from the threatened area.
The evacuations highlight a recurring challenge with Canadian wildfires: many vulnerable northern communities have limited road access.
When a rapidly advancing fire threatens one of these communities, aircraft may become one of the only practical ways to evacuate large numbers of residents.
First Nations are disproportionately affected by Canada's wildfire emergencies. Federal estimates indicate First Nations communities account for about 42% of wildfire-related evacuations despite representing roughly 5% of Canada's population.
British Columbia and the Bald Range Wildfire
British Columbia became another major disaster zone during August.
Extreme wildfire conditions in the Okanagan triggered evacuation orders around Summerland and Peachland, forcing thousands of residents from their homes.
On August 7, authorities warned that the rapidly spreading Bald Range wildfire presented a significant threat to life and ordered people in affected areas to evacuate immediately. Highway 97 was also closed through part of the affected area.
At the height of the emergency, Reuters reported that more than 20,000 people had been forced to flee, while the Bald Range fire had expanded to approximately 9,500 hectares. Extreme fire behavior and infrastructure disruptions were reported in the region.
Conditions subsequently improved. By the morning of August 28, regional officials had rescinded the remaining Bald Range evacuation alerts and the Shingle Creek evacuation order.
The fire nevertheless demonstrates how quickly wildfire risk can change. A community may move from monitoring a distant fire to receiving an evacuation order in a matter of hours.
Canadian Wildfire Smoke Reaches the United States
The effects of Canada's fires do not stop at the border.
During July, smoke from fires in Ontario and other parts of Canada traveled south into the United States.
NASA satellite and atmospheric modeling tracked Canadian wildfire smoke traveling across large portions of the United States between July 14 and July 17, with active fires producing enormous smoke plumes capable of traveling thousands of miles.
The smoke affected cities and states throughout the Great Lakes and Northeast, including areas around New York City.
A United Nations University analysis estimated that smoke from the mid-July fires produced approximately 106 million person-days of unhealthy, very unhealthy or hazardous air-quality exposure across Canada and the United States during just July 15–17.
Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter capable of penetrating deep into the lungs. As a result, a Canadian forest fire can become a public-health emergency hundreds or even thousands of miles from the actual flames.
Disaster Relief and Emergency Response
Canada's 2026 wildfire response has required resources far beyond local fire departments.
By August 18, more than 500 international firefighters from Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia and New Zealand had assisted Ontario and British Columbia. Canada also entered the season with additional federal firefighting capacity, including funding for new aircraft and national response resources.
Emergency response involves far more than extinguishing flames. Large wildfire disasters require evacuation transportation, emergency shelters, food, generators, air filtration, medical assistance, road management, communications and eventually rebuilding assistance.
These needs can continue for weeks or months after a wildfire has been contained.
Where Are Canada's Wildfires Heading Next?
Canada's wildfire season is not necessarily finished when August ends.
As of the federal government's August 18 outlook, above-average temperatures were expected across much of Canada into September. Continued dryness meant elevated wildfire risk could persist in several regions.
Natural Resources Canada expected southern British Columbia fires to remain active through the remainder of August, while localized above-normal danger could continue in northern British Columbia, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, northwestern Quebec and Nunavut. September fire danger was forecast to remain above normal across much of Canada, although seasonal conditions generally reduce the likelihood of extreme northern fire growth later in the year.
That makes live mapping particularly important.

The Bigger Picture
The 2026 Canada wildfires demonstrate how several different hazards can combine into one large-scale disaster.
Lightning and human activity provide ignition sources. Drought dries vegetation. Extreme heat lowers fuel moisture. Wind accelerates fire growth. Remote geography makes suppression difficult. And atmospheric circulation can transport smoke across an entire continent.
By August 26, more than 4.43 million hectares — roughly 10.95 million acres — had burned across Canada.
For disaster relief organizations, the lesson is increasingly clear: wildfire planning cannot focus solely on communities immediately next to a fire. Evacuation routes, Indigenous and remote communities, electrical infrastructure, highways, drinking-water systems, emergency shelters and regional air quality all need to be considered.
